Kite.ai

An AI-native Layer-1 blockchain (Avalanche subnet) building the identity, payment, and settlement rail for the agent economy — "the Stripe for autonomous agents."

1. Core Product / Service

Kite.ai (formerly Zettablock) operates Kite Chain, a purpose-built EVM-compatible Layer-1 launched as a dedicated Avalanche-ecosystem chain. Mainnet went live on April 30, 2026, transitioning from a testnet that had been running since February 2025. The architecture stacks three layers: (a) a stable, native settlement layer (Kite Chain) that processes stablecoin payments and connects to traditional banking, (b) the Kite Agent Passport — a programmable wallet + verifiable identity for individual agents, and (c) an Agent Interface & Experience layer for service discovery and agent registration [cryptodaily, 2026-05-09].

The chain runs a Proof-of-AI (PoAI) consensus with KiteVM extensions on top of EVM compatibility, and natively supports four agent payment standards in parallel: x402-protocol (Coinbase), Google's AP2, stripe's MPP (Machine Payments Protocol), and Anthropic's MCP. This multi-standard posture is unusual — most competitors back exactly one. Stablecoin-native settlements support USDC, PYUSD, and USDT.

Developer surface: a Python SDK (gokite on PyPI), Solidity smart contracts via KiteVM, sample dApps (counter, voting), and a docs portal at docs.gokite.ai. The public GitHub gokite-ai org has 28 repos but consists mostly of forks of Avalanche tooling (avalanchego, subnet-evm, avalanche-cli) plus the AP2 implementation; the core protocol code is private [local: 2026-04-04 research].

2. Target Users & Pain Points

Three audiences, in roughly this priority:

  • Agent developers building autonomous agents that need to pay for APIs, services, or goods on their user's behalf. Pain point: today's payment rails (Stripe, credit cards, OAuth) all assume a human in the loop. Kite gives agents a wallet + spending policy + verifiable identity in one bundle.
  • API/service providers who want to monetize agent traffic without subscription friction. Pain point: usage-based billing for unauthenticated machine traffic. Kite (via x402 compatibility) lets providers gate any HTTP endpoint behind a per-call USDC payment.
  • End users delegating tasks to agents — Kite Agent Passport gives them programmable spending limits, time/merchant scoping, and a single audit trail across every agent they deploy [dailyhodl, 2026-05-09].

The headline consumer demo is "your Claude agent buys something on Amazon for you" — Kite has integrations with Claude already shipped at mainnet and 90+ service providers wired in [cryptodaily, 2026-05-09].

3. Competitive Landscape

Player Approach Native rail Identity Differentiation
Kite.ai Dedicated L1 + agent passport Multi-standard (x402, AP2, MPP, MCP) Hierarchical KitePass Only one running its own chain; supports all major protocols
x402-protocol (Coinbase) Open HTTP 402 standard, no chain of its own USDC on Base Wallet address Open standard; Kite is one of many chains that implement it
coinbase-agentkit + AWS Bedrock SDK + AgentCore Payments x402 / USDC on Base Coinbase wallet Distribution muscle (AWS deal, May 2026)
stripe + Tempo (MPP) Session-based streaming; fiat + stablecoin Tempo chain + Stripe rails Stripe customer ID Compliance stack (Radar, PCI, tax) baked in
skyfire "Reputation passport" for agents Crypto micropayments Cross-platform agent score Pure trust layer; no chain

The honest read: x402 is a protocol, not a competitor — Kite implements it. The real fight is distribution against Stripe/Tempo and Coinbase/AWS, both of whom have far larger merchant networks. Kite's bet is that an L1 with native agent identity + multi-standard support becomes the neutral hub when no single legacy player wins.

4. Unique Observations

  • Pivot from Zettablock is significant. The team came from running production data infra for avalanche, Polygon, Sui, Chainlink, EigenLayer (i.e., they were the data plumbing for crypto's last cycle). The pivot to "agent payments L1" is essentially "we already know how to run distributed infra at scale, now we're applying it to agents." Stronger positioning than 90% of AI-coin teams that have neither the infra DNA nor the AI DNA [local: 2026-04-04].
  • Multi-protocol support is a hedge, not conviction. From the local notes: Kite supports x402 + AP2 + MPP + MCP all at once. This is pragmatic — they don't know which protocol wins, so they ride all four. But it also means Kite has no protocol moat of its own; differentiation is the chain + identity layer, not the payment standard [local: 2026-04-04].
  • Token supply concern. As of pre-mainnet: 82% of KITE was not in circulation. Total supply 10B. That is a heavy unlock schedule overhanging the price unless mainnet adoption absorbs supply fast [docs.gokite.ai, local: 2026-04-04].
  • Strategic risk: x402 commodifies the stack. If Coinbase's x402-protocol becomes the universal standard (which AWS adopting it on May 7, 2026 strongly suggests), every L1 implements it. Kite's moat narrows to "agent passport + UX" — defensible only if they win network effects on the identity side before skyfire or Coinbase ships an equivalent.
  • Tempo/MPP is the underrated competitor. From Jimmy's diary: Stripe-Paradigm Tempo + MPP launched March 18, 2026 with Visa and Stripe's compliance stack. AI Agent payments via Tempo would route through Stripe's existing merchant base. Kite's edge is being crypto-native; Tempo's edge is being merchant-native. The crypto-native rail wins if you believe agent commerce is mostly machine-to-machine API payments; the merchant-native rail wins if it's agents buying real goods [local: 2026-04-01].
  • The Encode hackathon (March 2026) and Google AP2 partnership (Feb 2026) are reasonable adoption signals but not yet ecosystem-grade traction. "90+ service providers" at mainnet sounds large but most are pilot/integration-stage, not transacting volume [cryptodaily, 2026-05-09].

5. Financials / Funding

  • Total raised: $33M cumulative (Series A press release, Sep 2025) [paypal-corp newsroom, 2026-05-09]; subsequent Coinbase Ventures strategic round in Oct 2025 may bring this higher — one source cites $35M as of mainnet [cryptodaily, 2026-05-09].
