Google AI Studio is the only one to offer "try the top-tier model for free". This is a differentiation Google can play because of its TPU-backed in-house capacity and the fact that it doesn't rely on model API as a direct revenue line.

4. Unique Observations

  • Strategic implications of generous free quotas: Gemini 3 Pro's free tier of thousands of RPM per day is something no other vendor could give (OpenAI's GPT-5 free trial is only the ChatGPT web limit, no free API). This is Google's asymmetric play built on "L1 self-built TPUs + no dependence on API revenue" — OpenAI / Anthropic have to make money selling tokens through APIs and can't afford free tiers; Google's real money is in Search ads and Workspace subscriptions, and AI Studio's free tokens have a marginal cost that's just in-house TPU electricity.
